Redds Que & Stew in Nicholson Georgia |
One of my favorite places to eat close to where I live is the Redd House in Nicholson, Georgia. On special occasions my family and I enjoy going to The Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle Georgia. For a great old southern dining experience, I believe that The Redd House is every bit as good, so when I heard that they had opened up a BBQ restaurant not too far up the road, I couldn’t wait to give their BBQ a try. Redds Que & Stew is a charming little place off the beaten path also in Nicholson off of Georgia Highway 335. This is a community restaurant filled with locals that serves up smoked pork, chicken, ribs and stew as well as other offerings. Choices are smoked on their very unique and one of a kind homemade offset smoker where they let me go inside their kitchen to look at. The dining room is fairly small, but they have an enclosed back porch with tables and a back deck with picnic tables that you can dine on outside. The wait staff was just as nice and downhome as can be. I ordered up a plate of ribs with beans and slaw and a side of Brunswick stew. My wife had their chopped BBQ chicken sandwich, and my little girl had their chopped pork BBQ sandwich. While we were waiting for our dinner to arrive, I sampled their BBQ sauces that were on the table. One was a ketchup based vinegary sauce that had a tang to it; they also served up a mustard based sauce that was on the vinegary side, too. When I ordered the ribs, I was told that they are so good they slide right off the bone, and indeed they did as they were really over cooked. They reminded me of the shorts ribs that my mother use to make after stewing them for hours. My wife’s chicken sandwich was very dry and did have a little smoke flavor to it and my daughters pork sandwich was very good and had a delicious flavor to it and was the best thing we had there. The slaw was on the dry vinegary side and the beans were good homemade baked beans. The Brunswick stew was very good and had a nice peppery flavor with a nice base to it. Considering how great the Redd House is, and a restaurant I highly recommend you check out if your anywhere near the Jefferson, Nicholson area, Redds Que & Stew left us somewhat disappointed in our BBQ experience there. I was expecting so much more and was greatly disappointed. I give Redds Que & Stew a 2.25 on the squeal meter. Pics are in the pic section. |

I get a lot of request for recipes on this site. I do from time to time post a few recipes that I have enjoyed and that have turned out pretty tasty. I’m a fan of you-tube and I found a couple of great videos that might inspire you to get out and start smoking some BBQ and try a few new techniques. I have used a few of these tips and spiced them up a bit for my taste, but I thought you all might enjoy watching some of these videos that are informative and entertaining. Mountain Man BBQ in Dillard Georgia |
Up in the North Georgia mountains on the outskirts of Dillard, I came across a little BBQ restaurant called Mountain Man BBQ. We decided to stop in for lunch and to see what Mountain Man had to offer. Inside was a very nice and friendly wait staff to greet us and the restaurant was very nice and clean. They had a great variety on their menu. Not only could you get BBQ sandwiches and ribs, chicken and stew, but they also offered up pizza, salads, burgers and wings. My wife ordered up a tuna salad plate, while I had a pulled pork sandwich. The sandwich came with their vinegary and tangy Carolina BBQ sauce and was served with homemade potato chips and a side of their creamy coleslaw. While the sandwich was a nice sized portion, the pork was lacking flavor to me . I couldn’t detect very much smoke or seasoning in the meat. It was, for my taste, a little bland and lacking flavor. The Brunswick stew had a nice consistency and was on the tangy side with their Carolina BBQ sauce used as the base. My wife loved her tuna fish salad plate and the kids enjoyed their chicken fingers, but I was a little disappointed on my end. This was a nice place to stop in for lunch with lots of variety to choose from, but their BBQ to me, just wasn’t a hit. I give Mountain Man BBQ a 2.75 of the squeal meter. Corky's Ribs and BBQ in Gatlinburg |
I recently took my family back up to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and while we were there I couldn’t wait to stop in at Corky’s and taste their BBQ. I had passed by them on my last trip there, and wished I had gone. Corky’s is a chain restaurant out of Memphis. You can also buy their sauce and ribs at the Kroger near me, as well as, at Corky‘s website. I have always heard good things about their BBQ, so I couldn’t wait to have at it! We went on a Wednesday night, and the restaurant was not busy at all. I checked out the menu, and they had a variety of things to choose from including pulled pork, ribs, brisket and chicken. I ordered up a combo plate with ribs, brisket and chicken which was served with mac-n-cheese and a side of sweet potato fries. The mac-n-cheese was very moist and cheesy, and the sweet potato fries were a real treat and tasted fantastic. The brisket was a bit overcooked and was served chopped and mixed with their BBQ sauce; it had a very nice taste to it. I was nicely surprised by the chicken I was served. They gave me a breast piece which was served hot and moist and was very good. Most restaurants will throw the leg or thigh at you on a combo plate, so it was a nice treat. The ribs were out of this world! They were cooked perfect, and as soon as I bit into them I could taste the hickory smoke right away. Then their rub mixed with their delicious BBQ sauce was really lip smacking good! The whole combo plate hit a homerun with me and really quenched my hunger for some great BBQ. Their menu was reasonably priced and had a nice variety to from which to choose . My wife had their pulled pork sandwich with a side of slaw and sweet potato fries The BBQ sandwich was served hot and moist, and she really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed their BBQ sauce which is ketchup based and on the sweet side, but is packed full of flavor and a nice addition to any smoked meat. Next time your up in the Gatlinburg, by-pass all the other BBQ joints and head straight to Corky’s BBQ and see if you don’t agree that this is some of the finest BBQ that you can put in your mouth!! I give Corky’s a 4.75 on the Squeal Meter. Pics are in the pic section www.corkysbbq.com |
