Smokin" Gold BBQ in Dahlonega Georgia |
This week I headed up to Dahlonega, Georgia where I was invited to a gem of a restaurant called Smokin’ Gold BBQ. I was invited by the owner Dan Dieterle to come up and give his BBQ a try. Dan is proud of his BBQ restaurant and as his commercials say… “We don’t just say we have good BBQ, we have the trophies on the wall to prove it!” Indeed they do, too. Dan also has a KCBS BBQ team called Big Green Eggs and Ham and all of the trophies on the wall prove that Dan does know his BBQ. I decided to take Dan up on his request, so a buddy and I headed up to North Georgia mountains after work to see what Smokin’ Gold BBQ had to offer. The first thing we noticed was the smoker in the front of the restaurant, as well as, the array of green eggs where Dan cooks his BBQ. The restaurant is nestled in with a convenience store on one side. However, the restaurant is very appealing with its down home feel to it, checkered tabled clothes, and trophies lining the walls. The menu is BBQ rich with offerings of pork, chicken, ribs and brisket which you can get as sandwiches or as dinner combos that are all reasonably priced. There was also a great variety of BBQ sauces from which to choose. There was a Carolina vinegar based sauce that had a nice sweet tang to it. There was also a version of the Alabama white BBQ sauce which had a good flavor to it, but was on the vinegary side. There was a ketchup based hot BBQ sauce which had a little heat to it, but nothing overpowering. My favorite was a mustard base BBQ sauce that was well balanced and had a delicious flavor to it. Dan, boasts (and has the first place trophies to prove) about how good his brisket is, so I decided to have a combo of brisket and ribs with sides of corn casserole and baked beans. The ribs were St. Louis style and the brisket was served sliced and hot. It was absolutely the best brisket I have had in any restaurant to date! They were very tender and had a great flavor to them and were cooked to perfection. The ribs had a great tasting rub with a nice BBQ glaze, but they were a little tough to get off the bone and needed a little bit more time in the smoker; the flavor was great though! The baked beans were loaded with smoked pork and were outstanding. My buddy enjoyed the pulled pork and chicken plate and complimented the pork on being moist and juicy. The owner Dan Dieterle came over to our table and talked BBQ with us and shared all about his experiences with his restaurant and competing in cooking competitions. It’s meeting folks like Dan and the passion he has for his BBQ that makes traveling to all of these restaurant’s worth while. If your heading up the North Georgia mountains, stop in and try some award winning BBQ and talk BBQ with Dan and his wife Laurie at Smokin’ Gold BBQ. I give Smokin’ Gold BBQ a 4 on the squeal meter. Williamson Bros. BBQ in Canton Georgia |
When we pulled up for lunch at the Williamson Bros. BBQ restaurant in Canton Georgia, the aroma of the hickory smoke filled the air as we made our way into this very nice looking restaurant. Once inside you could tell this was a BBQ restaurant that had established itself. The restaurant's many brand name sauces for sale filled the lobby and inside was everything you expect a good BBQ restaurant to look like. The smoker inside the restaurant was filled with butts and ribs, enough to make any BBQ lover salivate! On this cold January day there was a roaring fire from the fireplace that made for such a nice setting. The restaurant was very clean and the outdoor decor and stuffed animals mounted on the wall just added to feel of being in a rustic BBQ restaurant. The very attentive wait staff was able to answer all of my questions about their products and the service was very good. I had the chopped BBQ plate with BBQ beans and slaw. The chopped BBQ was good BBQ covered with their vinegar based BBQ sauce. The BBQ beans tasted home made and the slaw was very fresh and on the sweet side. Others in my party enjoyed their BBQ chicken sandwich with brunswick stew. They loved the smoked chicken, but the brunswick stew was a bit on the vinegary side. The sweet tea was all southern and very delicious. All in all this was a very enjoyable experience, and I would gladly recommend Williamson Bros. BBQ to any BBQ lover as it was recommended to me. It was a very family friendly restaurant with delicious food. I give them a 3.75 on the squeal meter :) WWW.Williamsonbros.com |

Mickey Piggs in Alto Georgia |
I received an invitation from owner Jerry Smith to come eat at his restaurant, Mickey Piggs in Alto, Georgia. My family and I were heading up to the Smoky Mountains and Mickey Piggs happened to be on the way up on Hwy. 365 heading towards the north Georgia Mountains. Mickey Piggs is a very nice looking restaurant with a variety of menu choices. There is not only a BBQ, but you can also get salads, burgers, fried shrimp, and fried catfish. Mickey’s also prides itself on some of the most mouth-watering homemade desserts you’ve ever seen. Besides the same old BBQ entree’s, they have kicked BBQ up a few levels with a unique sandwich. My wife ordered their specialty sandwich; pulled pork topped with BBQ sauce, sautéed onions and melted provolone cheese served on a hoagie roll with baked beans. My wife loved it! It was a nice unique sandwich that had great flavor. The baked beans had a delicious BBQ flavor to them. I ordered a chopped BBQ sandwich with a bowl of Brunswick stew. My sandwich was packed full of chopped BBQ-perfect to fill a healthy appetite. The Brunswick stew was served with a side of cornbread. It was hearty tasting with lots of meat and well balanced with tomatoes and corn- it just hit the spot on the cold rainy day that I stopped in. They had a very nice kids menu that gave my little ones a variety to choose from; Mickey Piggs is very family friendly. Mickey Piggs hit on all cylinders in my book. It offered great BBQ, delicious Brunswick stew, and a very creative menu with a wide variety to entice you. My only regret is that I didn’t have room for any of their great looking desserts! Do yourself a favor and make plans to check out and eat at Mickey Piggs. I’m glad I finally did. Thanks for the invite Jerry it was well worth the trip!! I give Mickey Piggs a 4.50 on the squeal meter. Pics are in the pic section WWW.Mickeypiggsbbq.com |

Zeb's BBQ in Danielsville Georgia |
Well, as most people ring in the new year with a resolution to lose weight, mine is to take in more BBQ restaurants in 2010. We started the new year off just right and took a beautiful drive to Danielsville, Georgia to check out Zeb’s BBQ. Zeb’s is a small country place that I had read great reviews about from others, and I couldn’t wait to finally make the journey over to give them a try. Zeb’s is the kind of place you think about when you talk about a small town BBQ restaurant. It is out in the middle of nowhere and when we pulled up to Zeb’s the parking lot was packed on this busy Saturday night. As you enter the door you can’t help but feel at home at this wonderful charming hometown restaurant. There was a great big “how y’all doin?” that set the tone for our dinner at Zeb’s. The menu was a simple one with BBQ sandwiches or pork plates from which to choose . Zeb’s is known for their Brunswick stew, and we soon found out why. My wife had their Brunswick stew, and I had the pork plate The pork plate was served with slaw, stew, chopped pork and chips. Our twins had BBQ sandwiches with chips. Each table at Zeb’s had a loaf of fresh sunbeam white bread sitting on it. As your waiting for your order, the waitress brings a little jug of Zeb’s BBQ sauce which is uniquely served warm to each table. I decided to try the sauce to see what kind of base Zeb’s used, and I found out real quick that it is warm vinegar with pepper in it. Definitely Carolina based! If you like sweet BBQ sauce, you won’t like Zeb’s sauce at all! Our very sweet and accommodating waitress brought out our food which looked delicious, and we couldn’t wait to dig in. Their BBQ sandwiches were nice sized and my wife had a generous portion of Brunswick stew, which was the best she had ever tasted. As soon as you took one bite you could taste the enhanced corn flavor and delicious base that had your taste buds begging for more. My pork plate was served with probably the leanest looking chopped pork that I have ever seen. They either have skinny pigs in Danielsville, or they spend a lot of time prepping their pork. The pork was good and had a nice flavor to it, but I couldn’t taste any smoke flavor coming from it at all. Their homemade coleslaw was on the sweet side and had a hint of pickles in it and was quite good. I also had a side of stew which was delicious. Zeb’s didn’t have any ribs or smoked chicken on the menu, so it was a very basic BBQ restaurant with a great hometown appeal. I would of like to have tried their ribs and had the choice of another sauce to try, but all in all Zeb’s was a great family outing with great tasting BBQ. I give Zebs a 4 on the squeal meter.
