Where's The Best BBQ?
Backstreet BBQ in Hartwell Georgia

Every Memorial Day weekend, my wife and I pack up the kids and head up I-85 to Hartwell, Georgia. Besides beautiful Lake Hartwell, they host Challenge of the Centuries, a bike ride where hundreds of folks gather and ride the beautiful hills of Georgia and South Carolina. My wife and I never missed a ride until our twins came along, so now we go up and just relive the memories. Hartwell was host to a car show that day, as well.  So, the little town was very busy and the perfect atmosphere to hunt out a BBQ joint!

We found the right place on our journey that day. Backstreet BBQ is a small hometown BBQ restaurant with a very comfortable relaxed atmosphere that was very enjoyable. When you sit down at the table there was already a pitcher of sweet tea, loaf bread, a roll of paper towels and not to mention a selection of BBQ sauces that are waiting for you. I always like to sample the different sauces when I arrive and Backstreet had some very unique and flavorful sauces to try.

Their mild BBQ sauce was very thin with a vinegar base to it. There was also a hot BBQ sauce which had all the pepper seeds floating around in it and it did have a nice bite to it.

I ordered the chicken plate and my wife had their BBQ pork plate. The first thing I can say is it was served quickly and HOT!!! Thank goodness there is a BBQ restaurant that knows how to serve hot “BBQ”!! My chicken was moist and tender and had a nice BBQ taste to it. It was served with Brunswick stew and slaw. Both were very good and had a great flavor to them. The slaw was on the sweet side and the stew was very fresh tasting. My wife’s BBQ pork plate had a generous amount of pork on it and was also served with stew and slaw. The pork was tender and fresh tasting.

Backstreet BBQ was a great experience and I can say it made our trip up to Hartwell having found such a nice hometown restaurant to have a great lunch at. I took a few pics you can check out in the pic section.

I give Backstreet BBQ a 4 on the squeal meter.

Country's BBQ in Columbus Georgia

I headed down to Columbus Georgia on my way to Florida for this trip and stopped in at Country’s BBQ. There are a few Country’s locations around Columbus, and we stopped in at the one on Veterans Parkway. Country’s has a good reputation for some good BBQ and good ol Brunswick stew. Country’s was a large restaurant, and it had an outdoorsy feel to it with murals painted on the walls. There were tents, canoes and kayaks hanging from the ceiling and moose heads hanging on the walls. The bar area had ski-lifts as bar stools. It was quite a unique restaurant, and the menu had a wide variety of choices to entice you. Not only was there BBQ, but they also served up a lot of country cooking, as well.

I was there for the BBQ though, so I ordered up a BBQ pork sandwich with a side of Brunswick stew. The order took a while to get to us, but when it did everything was served nice and hot. The sliced pork sandwich was served with slaw on top of it. It had a nice smoked flavor to it, and the Brunswick stew was very good with a great texture and balance. Their BBQ sauce was a little tangy and vinegary but tasted good. The wait staff was very friendly, and the service was good. Country’s had a real southern appeal to it and was a nice stop for us on our way down to Florida. If you’re in Columbus, Country’s is definitely worth the stop for some good BBQ.

I give Country’s BBQ a 3.5 on the squeal meter.

Dreamland BBQ in Norcross Georgia

Dreamland BBQ was my pick for my next BBQ destination. I had read about and heard countless advertisements for Dreamland BBQ, so I found the closest one to me in Norcross, Georgia. I grabbed my neighbor, and we headed on down to Dreamland.

Dreamland BBQ was a very nice and family friendly restaurant. As soon as you walked in you noticed all of the famous folks who had been there as their autographs lined the walls. The place was a cross between a BBQ restaurant and a sports bar with all of the logos and advertisements hanging on the walls. In the back room was what I was looking for! They had a big open smoker going full blast with about 20 butts slow cooking to perfection. The smell was awesome, and I couldn’t wait to taste what Dreamland had to offer. As soon as we were seated, our server brought us out some plain ole white loaf bread with Dreamland’s BBQ sauce; I thought that was a great touch!

I ordered the rib plate which was served with St. Louis style ribs covered in Dreamlands vinegary BBQ sauce with baked beans and Brunswick stew. My buddy ordered their pork sandwich with fries. The pork sandwich was huge! It was enough to fill the hungriest of appetites. My ribs had a good taste to them, but were not fall off the bone delicious. I had to labor to get the meat off the bone. A little more cooking time was needed for my ribs. The beans were sweet and tasted good and the Brunswick stew was more like a vegetable stew with pork in it. It came with lima beans, potatoes and as the Chef at Slopes BBQ put it, it just didn’t seem like a southern Brunswick stew. Tim, the manager, checked in on us and was nice enough to let us sample some of Dreamlands smoked sausage served with Dreamland’s vinegary BBQ sauce. It was down right delicious and was probably the best thing that we ate there. With the smoker roaring and the atmosphere and reputation that Dreamland has established, I can honestly say that I expected a better BBQ experience than what we came away with from Dreamlands. The food just didn’t hit on all cylinders.

I give Dreamland a 3.5 on the squeal meter.

Fat Matt's Rib Shack in Atlanta

My family and I were in Atlanta this week, so I decided to seek out and find a restaurant that was voted one of the top BBQ restaurants in Atlanta. Fat Matts Rib Shack in Atlanta was this week’s destination. From the moment we arrived at Fat Matts you could see the loyal following this place has established. You talk about die hard customers! We got there about 11:15 and found out that Fat Matts didn’t open until 11:30. Customers were lined up waiting at the door to get in. I talked to a few people waiting to get in and  the regulars told me they phone in their orders ahead of time to avoid the lunch rush.

Fat Matts is a cool neighborhood  BBQ joint that features blues music for all of the locals to enjoy and really is what you would expect from a local eatery. There are pictures of locals and bands posted all over the wall, as well as, pictures of BBQ to entice you. They have your typical BBQ menu, but from what I had read about Fat Matts, the ribs were the way to go.

I ordered a half slab of ribs with Brunswick stew and my family had pulled pork sandwiches with chips. The pulled pork was smoked and slow cooked in their BBQ sauce which was a slightly tangy tomato based sauce. The pork was good and was served fast and hot. The ribs I had were some of the best I have ever tasted. The combination of the smoke, sauce and the grill flavor and fall off the bone tenderness definitely hit a homerun with me.  The Brunswick stew was good and flavorful with great texture.

I can honestly say in all my years in the restaurant business, I have never seen a BBQ restaurant this busy. Customers were still lined up to get into Fat Matts as we left. You know your at a good restaurant with a loyal following like Fat Matts has, but they also must be doing something right with the BBQ to keep bringing folks back for more like they have.

Hands down the best ribs I have had yet! I give the over all experience at Fat Matts a 4.8 on the squeal meter. Definitely worth the time to seek out and try if your ever in Atlanta.
