Smoakies BBQ in Cordele Georgia

Traveling south down I-75 we discovered a gem of a BBQ restaurant. Right outside of Cordele, Georgia about 1 mile east of the expressway we came across Smoakies BBQ. This is an old gas station that was converted into a BBQ restaurant. We arrived at lunchtime and had a hard time getting a parking place, but it was well worth the hassle. Once inside you can tell that this is a hometown restaurant with all of the hometown decor hanging on the walls. Our waitress promptly took our order and she was able to answer all of my BBQ questions. They use oak wood to smoke their meats with and they had both sweet and vinegar based BBQ sauces. I ordered their pulled pork plate as did my wife . The plates were served with a generous amount of pork that was served hot and moist and served with slaw and Brunswick stew. The stew had a great base to it and was seasoned to perfection. The slaw was on the sweet side and was fresh and delicious. I tried both BBQ sauces and both, the sweet and the vinegar sauces had a great base and were very tasty.

Steve, the owner came over and was very attentive and was very generous of his time during a busy lunch rush. I cannot wait until my next trip to Florida just to stop in and visit this delightful and very delicious BBQ restaurant again! I give Smoakies BBQ a 4.75 on the squeal meter.

Mention this website and get 1/2 off your dessert at Smoakies!

Tomlin's BBQ in Rabun Gap Georgia

For our latest BBQ journey we headed up to the North Georgia Mountains for the 13th annual Dillard Bluegrass and Barbeque Festival and boy did we find a gem of a BBQ stand on the way up. Tomlin’s BBQ stand is right next to Osage’s produce market in Rabun Gap Georgia. We stopped at the produce market to get some fresh veggies and fruit since that’s what you do on trips to the mountains. Sitting right next door to the produce market was Tomlin’s BBQ. This was one of the little road side stands you love to run into when you’re out on a road trip. I decided to get a BBQ sandwich just to give it a try, and as I was waiting in line one of the locals to the area started telling me a little about Tomlin’s. Regis and Kelly had received comments from viewers who recommended Tomlin’s as a great place to go for BBQ in Georgia, so this peaked my curiosity even more.

The little BBQ stand was quite busy, and I soon found out why. This place caught me by surprise! I wasn’t that hungry, but I had to at least get a sandwich to give it a try. My wife and I shared their BBQ sandwich which was hot chopped pork served with their vinegar based BBQ sauce. It was delicious and jam packed with BBQ pork; it really had us wanting more. Once we checked into our cabin we decided we were going back to Tomlin’s for dinner since one of the customers told me their ribs were the best. We packed up and went down there to grab some dinner and were heartbroken that they were only open for lunch ! I wish I could have had the opportunity to have had dinner there, but I will have to make a special trip back up to the mountains just to try Tomlin’s ribs. If your heading up to the Georgia Mountains on Hwy 441, stop by Tomlin’s and give it a try. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

All I had was the BBQ pork sandwich, but it was delicious, so I’ll give it a 4.25 on the squeal meter! I’ll let you know soon about their ribs !!!

Tomlin’s is only open May through October and, as I found out the hard way, only open for lunch. I posted a few pics to give you a look at Tomlin’s BBQ.

Two Brothers BBQ in Ball Ground Georgia

After heading into Atlanta for my last couple of reviews I decided to head back up into the hills of Georgia for my next BBQ adventure. I went to Two brothers BBQ in Ball Ground Georgia which I had read about online and they were also recommended to me by co-workers. Two Brothers is definitely off the beaten path and is a hometown restaurant with a lot of appeal. It will really take you back when you walk into this well established restaurant with antiques and relics from days gone by hanging on the walls.

Their menu was a meat and 3 veg where you could choose from pulled pork, beef or a ½ slab of ribs with sides ranging from mac-n-cheese, fried okra, collards, baked beans or slaw to mention just a few that you could choose from. There was also a pulled pork sandwich which was hickory smoked pork served with their very tangy vinegar tomato based sauce. A few in our party of 5 ordered the pulled pork with collards and fried okra. The pork was served hot with their sauce on top, and I ordered a ½ slab of ribs with their homemade BBQ baked beans and a side of Brunswick stew. The ribs were served slightly warm with their very tangy BBQ sauce smothering the ribs. The ribs were tender, but Two Brothers BBQ sauce was, as you could figure out, too tangy for my taste. I wish their sauce was served on the side so I could have tasted the ribs a little better. The baked beans were tasty and the Brunswick stew was very good with a nice flavor to it.

I like vinegar based BBQ sauce, but two brothers will have you puckering up with the first bite!

As far as décor goes, Two Brothers BBQ is very unique and will have you spending a lot of your visit there checking out all of the relics from days gone by. The staff was very nice and provided great friendly service. The BBQ though fell short of our expectations from everyone in our party. A few of the ladies in our group were disappointed that Two Brothers BBQ did not offer any BBQ chicken on their menu that day.

All in all Two Brothers was a unique and friendly BBQ restaurant. I give Two Brothers BBQ a 3 on the squeal meter.

For some reason my pics didn’t turn out too good, but I posted them anyway for you to check out in the pic section.

Dillard's Bluegrass and Barbeque Fest

A few weekends ago, we made the trip up to Dillard Georgia for the 13th annual Dillard’s Bluegrass and Barbeque festival. The event was held on the grounds at the Dillard House which is a historic Inn and restaurant in the North Georgia Mountains. We got there late Friday and walked the grounds and got to visit with a few of the competitors. I think what I enjoy most about going to these events early is talking to the competitors and just to take in the comradery and passion they have for their hobby and with each other.

Another thing I like is the way you just feel at home with the great atmosphere where the only thing bigger than the waist size for most is the size of the smokers. The hardware they bring to these events is truly something to see. From home made smokers big and small to the big green eggs set up everywhere. There is really a sense of pride among the competitors and their equipment.

There was a good turn out for the event; the weather was beautiful and there was bluegrass playing along with the smell of BBQ filling the air to get everyone in the mood for the festivities.

At the days end on Saturday the over all Grand Champion was crowned and this year Swamp Boys captured the top prize with the runner up going to team Bobby Q. There were 57 competitors competing this year, and there was a good crowd on hand. Folks showed up to take it all in, and to watch and learn from the pros. If you’re really in to BBQ, it’s worth the time to check out one of these cook off’s just to see the smokers and talk with the competitors.  Of course, take in the great atmosphere that goes along with it.

There are a few pics to look at in the pic section that you can check out.
